Who are we?

The main objective of Jabeprode is to fight against the Asian hornet because it is an invasive species, harmful to the ecosystem. To do this, we have developed our traps which have a double action:

Both preventive; arranged during the nesting season, they capture the queens before they have time to found a colony.

But also curative; the size of the selective access modules allowing to capture also the workers during the rest of the season, especially in summer/autumn where the attacks are the most important.

Selective Trapping.

At Jabeprode, it was important for us that our trap did not have a more harmful impact on the environment and the ecosystem than the Asian hornet we are fighting against (Asian hornet). This is why our Bac de capture has the particularity of being selective, this is what sets us apart from our main competitors. The access modules being calibrated to the hundredth of a millimeter, the trap is perfectly targeted for the Asian hornet, allowing both smaller insects like bees, wasps or flies coming out of the trap through the openings while preventing larger insects (such as the European hornet queen in particular) from entering the trap.

Principle of operation of the trap.

The traps are composed of a tray in which the bait will be placed (read more). This bin is covered with a catch cage with a fine mesh that prevents trapped insects from accessing the bait. This has two advantages: The bait remains intact throughout the season and the hornets do not have access to it, run out very quickly and die in less than 48 hours.

The key to our trap is selectivity.

The capture cage is equipped with two selective access modules arranged face to face. These cone shaped funnel pieces are pierced with numerous openings allowing the exit of the insects not targeted by the trap, but also the free circulation of the scents, carrying the smell of the bait to several hundred meters. The funnel ends with an input reducer calibrated to the hundredth of a millimetre, just allowing a queen to make her way. Path that it will not manage to perform in the opposite direction because at the end is a sight-glass that still limits the possibility of exit. This reducer also prevents larger insects (like the queen of the European hornet) from entering and thus ensures perfect selectivity.

A rewarded trap made in France

Our selective access module won the grand prize of the Lépine competition as well as the gold medal of the same competition in 2018. We were also awarded the Agricultural Merit Magazine Award and the Lépine Gold Medal again in 2021 as a result of our enhancement.

With the aim of preserving the ecosystem, we felt it was important that our trap had the lowest possible impact on the environment. For this reason, we selected components made in France and assembled by hand in Finistère, Pencran, where our workshop is located.

The city of Landerneau Daoulas was one of the first to order traps in quantity in order to preserve its territory from attacks of Asian hornets. This city has now been joined by many others like Biarritz or Saint-Brieuc who want to set up a collective struggle.
